After training the basics over the summer, and using the Mountainboard a few times to get things going, Pete has finally graduated to the kicksled! We've been looking forward to taking out the kicksled since we got snow a few days ago, but I've been on-call this week, so couldn't participate in the usual morning training / walks. We took two videos of this afternoon's ride. Although it was a little dark for decent video, we wanted something to mark the occasion. :-) Next time, I'll wear a headlight to illuminate Pete and our path for the video. Hopefully we'll get more snow next week when I'm no longer on-call. The kicksled is a lot of fun, although a little more side-wiggley than the mountainboard. :-)

Since it wasn't raining, like last Thursday night, Melanie was able to take some pictures (and two videos) of Pete's second day of dryland mushing. He still has to learn Gee and Haw, but we're halfway there. He also has to learn this is work, so no stopping to check things out (like benches and trees). :-) It takes quite a bit of effort to get the mountainboard going, but once it's on the way, it's pretty easy for him. I'm looking forward to Pete really "catching on" and taking longer rides. For now, we still have to stop once in a while amd do a little training. :-) After some tweeking of the suspension, brakes, etc., I expect someone on a mountainboard could handle 3-4 dogs. Perhaps next time at my mother's place we can try Pete and Tsumi together... :-)

We went to visit Janet, Don and the dogs. 2 litters were born. The last one of Flirt and the first one of Tracy. It is a lot a work to care for 2 litters, the dogs and the farm. They have a new member of the Farm, Wimmie the mule. We helped give out the puppies and prepare the dog basket. We also helped to do some stone work on the kennels. Don brought us to visit the Creemore brewery.

Well, Pete celebrated his 1st year on November 4th - as I turned 36 the same day. :-)
It's been a long road, but Pete is doing extremely well these days, and things just keep getting better. We had some aggression issues early on, and after some hard work - and a few training dead-ends - we're now feeding him without any hint of stress. As you know, we feed raw food, so those raw meaty bones have some pretty high value. :-) We're up to 3lbs/day of chicken backs, rabbit frames, meat (venision, bison and beef), offal (green tripe and liver), turkey neck, lamb bones, quail frames, etc. It's a little expensive (almost $200/month), but he should settle around 2lbs/day eventually. We used to chop up the bigger pieces, but now we're giving him the chicken backs, rabbit frames, etc. whole. Our current training consists of approaching the bowl and dropping more food as he's chewing on a piece. He's very relaxed and likes to see us coming towards him when he eats because he expects to get more food. :-) In another 3-4 weeks we expect to introduce larger and bigger bones. We're up to about 2-3 min / piece, but large beef bones can take a good 15-20 mins to finish. We're not there yet, but we'll get there eventually. :-) Pete also developed a dislike for being brushed, having his nails clipped and ears cleaned. We're addressing that by having him "pay for his meals". He has to submit to a brush (just a few strokes), etc. before every meal. If he complains, we postpone the meal. It hasn't happened too often. :-) He's started wagging his tail when he sees the brush, so we're making good progress. :-)

We went to Woodville ON with Pete for a WC tests. There were 66 dogs entered in different categories - WC, WCI and WCX. We had a great time and met really great people. We will need to practice more with real ducks and try again for the WC title. We hope you enjoy the pictures Melanie took of the Event.

We just got back from a long walk on the Mt-Royal. This was Pete's first time on Montreal's little mountain. We were waiting for the weather to warm-up a before taking Pete out for several hours at one time. He definately loved it, and we'll be back regularly. We got a chance to play in areas that are a little more challenging for Pete -- streams, bolders, underbrush, etc.

Pete and Toby had a great time every Wednesday night at the Puppy Kindergarden. Both of them are very outgoing and were a good match. Pete also gets to play with a lot of dogs at Park Lafontaine. We're looking forward to the summer when Pete will get to swim in the lake! :-)
The Puppy Kindergarden folder also contains pictures of Storm, Toby, and Rosie...

When we visited Donnett's Kennels, Janet gave us Pete's complete pedigree, including pictures of his parents: CH Skeetercreek's Blazing Flirt MH, QAA (Dam) and CH Donnett's Hero Weinstein, JH, WCI (Sire). Pete stands a good chance of being a beautiful and hard working dog. :-)
We're still working on Pete's CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) registration name. Traditionally, they include the kennel's name, a reference to his lineage, and his common name. A few we're currently considering (in no particular order):
- Donnett's Pepper Pete
- Donnett's Peppery Pete
- Donnett's Blazing Pete
- Donnett's Flirty Pete
- Donnett's Shadow Pete
- Donnett's Standing Pete
- Donnett's Pierre de Flirt
- Donnett's Pierre du Fleuve
- etc...
